What is Raspberry Leaf Tea?

Surprise! This tea comes from the leaves of the raspberry bush plant. The leaves are dried and then steeped to create a light-tasting, red-hued tea with powerful positive effects on labor and delivery. Its taste is fruity and earthy, similar to black tea but does not contain caffeine. Due to its light taste, it’s usually accompanied by other herbs or made into a raspberry leaf milk tea to enhance the flavor.

Benefits of Raspberry Leaf Tea

The herbal effects of raspberry leaves are still under scrutiny, as much of the evidence available is largely anecdotal. It is high in vitamins and minerals, tones the smooth muscles of the uterus, and relaxes cramping through the work of a chemical compound called “fragarine”. This working of the uterus can have pain-relieving effects during menstruation, labor, and the postpartum period. Studies have shown it can shorten the duration of labor by up to ten minutes when taken daily in the third trimester1. Using raspberry leaf tea for pregnancy is a common remedy prescribed among midwives. This amazing herb promotes postpartum recovery by using those same toning properties to help the uterus return to its normal size. It’s also suspected to help increase breast milk production and nutrition.23

There are no widespread known negative side effects, but anyone can react to any particular substance. It’s generally considered safe, but due to its effects on the uterus, you should avoid using this herb before 12 weeks of pregnancy.

How to Use

The following statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. These products are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. Consult with a trusted medical professional to know if these holistic methods are right for you.

For Pregnancy and Postpartum

The working compound, fragarine, needs to build up in your system before its effects can be noticed. For the best results, drink one cup (8oz) of tea daily, starting in the third trimester (>28 weeks). Continue drinking daily during the postpartum period as part of your self-care routine for at least 6 weeks.

For Menstrual Cramps

A week before your period is due, drink one cup of tea daily. Once your period comes, increase your intake to 2-3 cups per day of your cycle.

This raspberry leaf milk tea recipe is one of my favorite ways to enjoy this drink. If you prefer to enjoy without milk, you can omit it and use all water for a regular raspberry leaf tea recipe. I use Frontier Co-Op Organic Raspberry Leaf Tea (affiliate link).
